Jason was the first to spot it, and he screamed "BEAR!!!". I pulled the car over and got out. No time for the tripod, I shot the 200mm lens hand-held from about 40 feet away. The bear stopped eating the berries to check me out, but after deciding that I wasn't a threat he went back to munching. By the time I had gotten a few shots off, other cars were stopping and then the bear decided it was time to move on.
The black bears were a common sight around these parts, but the grizzlies not so much. We talked to people who had lived in Banff for over 5 years and had never spotted a grizzly, so we felt very fortunate. What a rush!
